"She will remember, you'll not forget her
Though you are far away.
She is calling, calling to you ever,
Honor the grand old "G". "
(From the official school song - Song of the "G" - by Miss Grace Tout)
Now that the Granite School District has decided to close the doors of Granite High School, maybe the "pain" of such a unthinkable thing can be eased by having one GIANT reunion with as many classes we can gather together...
The physical location of Granite High School may be just so much "brick and mortar" to others, but to those of us who spent years of our young lives there it is much more than that... To borrow some lines from our 1967 annual (page 3) :
"From the morning we entered the doors of Granite as sophomores to the evening we walked across the stage as seniors, capped and gowned, to receive our diplomas, we have been a part of the spirit of Granite. ...[W]e ... honored her traditions, supported her rules, and contributed to her spirit. We ... interwove... our lives with her and with each other until we [were] no longer individuals, alone, but an important part of a whole. Suddenly we no longer observe Granite and strive to become a part of her spirit. We are Granite... With spirit."
And, in the words of Vickie Bryant (Class of 1968) in an email to me:
"It seems too , too sad to let the 'OLD GIRL' go without a send-off."
As graduates of Granite High School we all plan our reunions to gather up our classmates to catch up on years gone by... Granite has "seen" a lot of graduates pass through her doors, so it only seems fitting that we, all the classes (past and present), gather together in one GIANT reunion to pay tribute to the "brick and mortar" of an important time in all of our lives - our time at Granite High School...
A "crazy" idea...? Maybe, but we will never know if we don't try, right...?
Think about it and post your thoughts here on our blog site
Thank you, Vickie for the great idea...
Take care and as always, keep in touch as time permits...
